Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought 3rd-level names remained working.
