The term “hosting” does not describe a single service, but a set of services that provide a variety of functions to a domain. Having a site and emails, as an example, are two separate services although in the general case they come together, so a lot of people see them as one single service. In reality, each domain name has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, that specifies where the site for the domain is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that manages the e-mails for the domain name. As an illustration, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record is mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a site or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain address has and the traffic/message is first forwarded to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the browser request or the e-mail will then be forwarded to the correct server. The concept behind using separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you can have your website hosted by one provider and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Website Hosting

If you have a cloud website hosting account from our company and you wish to direct either your site or your e-mails to an alternative company, it'll take you literally just 2 mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you are going to be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you wish to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it is not going to take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a particular MX record is going to have. The propagation of every record that you change or set up is not going to take more than a few hours and if necessary, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that shows how long a record will stay active after it's modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

With the semi-dedicated hosting plans which we offer, you're going to have 100 % control over the records of all domain addresses and subdomains which you add in your hosting account. You can easily check what A and MX records each of them has via the DNS Records section of the Hepsia hosting CP and changing any record requires only a few mouse clicks. If you want to switch your web or e-mail hosting provider, you can update the necessary record and direct your domain address to the other service provider for one of the services, while you still keep using the other one through us. Also you can keep the main domain name here, while you modify the A record of only one of its subdomains. If you're modifying the MX records and you need additional ones on top of the standard 2 that we have, you could create them with ease and set a different priority for each and every one.
